Diane Arbus
One of my favourite photographs of all time. I love the fashion and the cut of the clothes. Think of the way teenagers dress today! Look at their beautiful coats! When I first saw this image I thought it was cute because the kids looked young to me. Apparently they are 16, which again just contrasts against how fast kids grow up these days. You would never catch 16 year olds in 2008 wearing sensible clothes instead of cleavage and belly buttons exposed.
Just an extraordinary image, which to me represents the criminalisation and vulgar attitude of society towards people with differences, whether that be physical or mental disability, age, unconventional sets of values etc. How ostracising society can be. And also the prevalance of the worth society places on image, beauty, fashion etc and the notion that conforming to a certain type of stereotype will facilitate success. Diane Arbus was ahead of her time in documenting all of this. Kudos to this woman for partaking in the shot.
Again, great shot. A great example also of how fashion has changed and evolved. It is obvious from this photograph that the trend of dressing twins the same has remained, but that what they are dressed in itself has changed. A documentation of the flux of fashion, in a way. And of course a wonder of science, these two. Click here to see what they look like grown up.
See the 2008 reality TV series: Baby Ballroom.
